The 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project at Miami-Dade County Public Schools will celebrate its 32nd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Scholarship Breakfast on Saturday, January 18, 2025. The event, which highlights the organization’s commitment to mentoring and education, will take place at 8:30 a.m. at the Miami Beach Convention Center, located at 1901 Convention Center Drive, Miami Beach.
The breakfast will feature several significant moments, including the induction of new mentors into the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project and a Rites of Passage Ceremony for 45 Wilson Scholars. During the ceremony, members of the Wall Men—a key component of the project—will honor the graduating class and prepare the scholars for the next step in their academic journeys as they transition to college this fall.
Guests will enjoy breakfast accompanied by music from the Miami Carol City Senior High School Marching Band. The keynote address will be delivered by the Honorable Hakeem Jeffries, Democratic Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives. Jeffries is expected to share an inspiring message about the importance of education, leadership, and perseverance.
Additionally, a local community leader will be recognized during the event for their philanthropic contributions to children in South Florida.
About The 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project
The 5000 Role Models Excellence Project was founded in 1993 by Congresswoman Frederica Wilson, then a School Board Member, as a vehicle to curtail and delineate in-school dropouts and break the school-to-prison pipeline by ensuring young Black and Brown boys make it to college through mentorship and the creation of educational opportunities.
The organization has expanded across Florida to include Miami-Dade County, Broward, Pinellas, Hillsborough, and Duval counties. Most recently, the organization has planted its roots nationally in Detroit, MI, and Los Angeles, CA, in addition to international chapters being added in the islands of the Bahamas.
