The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County and City Theatre are bringing a bold and timely production to Miami audiences with the Southeastern U.S. premiere of Black Santa. This absurdist comedy, which explores race and racial bias through the lens of Santa Claus, will run from December 5-22 in the intimate Carnival Studio Theater as part of the Arsht’s Theater Up Close series.
Tickets are priced at $56 and $61, with VIP upgrades available for an additional $30. VIP tickets include premium seating, a complimentary beverage, and a festive gift bag, with proceeds supporting City Theatre’s arts education initiatives.
Directed by City Theatre’s artistic director Margaret M. Ledford, Black Santa dives into complex themes with humor and heart. “This play feels especially timely, as it explores the diverse perspectives that enrich our shared human experiences,” said Ledford. “It’s a story that will make you laugh and spark meaningful conversations.”
The story follows Sharifa, a third grader who stirs controversy by asserting that Santa Claus is Black. The school’s only Black teacher, Patrice Patterson, is tasked with creating an ad campaign to “make Santa white again,” a decision that places both Sharifa’s enrollment and Patrice’s integrity at risk.
The production features an all-local cast, including Carbonell and Silver Palm Award-winner Rita Cole, alongside Niki Fridh, Jeff Burleson, Robert L. Strain, Kimmie Harvey, and Phillip Andrew Santiago.
The opening weekend will include a holiday-themed celebration on Saturday, December 7, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., offering attendees a festive start to the run.
