On August 19, 2024, M-DCPS District 1 School Board Member Dr. Steve Gallon III, in collaboration with Commissioner Daniela Jean, hosted a special screening of the film “The Mecca: The Legends of Traz Powell Stadium” at the Julius Littman Theater. Dr. Gallon extended an invitation to District 1’s four high school football teams to attend this event, which highlights the story and historical significance of Nathaniel “Traz” Powell Stadium. The documentary offers a detailed look into the life, leadership, and enduring legacy of Nathaniel “Traz” Powell, while also exploring the profound impact of high school football in Miami-Dade County.
The screening provided student-athletes with an opportunity to engage with and learn from this compelling documentary, which features insights from players, coaches, leaders, and community figures who have contributed to the rich history of the area.
Both students and adults expressed their gratitude and newfound understanding of the pivotal role that Black history in Miami-Dade has played in shaping high school football and sports as we know them today.
Student-athletes from Miami Carol City Senior High, Miami Norland Senior High, North Miami Senior High, and North Miami Beach Senior High left the event feeling deeply inspired.
“It was a tremendous opportunity to not only provide an inspiring story to our football teams in District 1, but more importantly, an educational, fact-based account of high football and athletics in Miami-Dade,” said Dr. Gallon in a press release. “The experience also shed light on the role that historical African American figures such as Nathaniel Traz Powell played in its formation and continued impact.”
