Commemorating the Life and Legacy of the Late Honorable Gwendolyn Sawyer Cherry, Esq.

On February 7, 2024, State Representative Ashley V. Gantt (D-Miami) will be hosting an event to honor and commemorate the extraordinary life and legacy of the late Honorable Gwendolyn Sawyer Cherry, Esquire, who passed away on February 7, 1979. The State of Florida lost a true advocate for the people.

As a representative of the district the Honorable Gwendolyn Sawyer Cherry served, Representative Gantt is proud to commemorate her life and legacy as a trailblazer in Florida’s political history. Gwendolyn Sawyer Cherry holds a distinct place in our state’s history as the first Black woman to serve as a Florida Legislator. Her tireless dedication to public service and commitment to advocating for the rights and well-being of all Floridians left an indelible mark on our legislative landscape.

The commemoration event will be held on February 7, 2024, the 45th anniversary of her passing, at the Florida Capitol in Sumner Hall located at 402 S Monroe St. Tallahassee, FL 32399 from 6:00-7:30 PM.
