Well-Known Community Activist New Assistant Principal At Miami Southridge Senior High School

By Nyam Daniel

Beloved educator and community activist, Tawana Akins, has started the new year as the assistant principal at Miami Southridge Senior High School. Akins, who’s been an educator for nearly 20 years, is a former Teacher of the Year finalist for Miami-Dade County Public Schools. She also won numerous awards as an educator and has been recognized for her stance against gun violence and social media activism.

She rose to local and national fame when she spoke out against gun violence after the senseless killing of her great-nephew, 6-year-old King Carter. She has devoted her time to making sure all children are safe in and out of the classroom.

Akins hails from Liberty City, and is a Miami Northwestern Senior High Alumna. Congratulations from Hy-Lo News.
