The Urban Film Festival is set to host a landmark screening of “Mosiah,” the first-ever narrative film centered on the life of iconic political activist Marcus Garvey. The screening is scheduled for this Saturday, August 31, at 4:30 PM at the Overtown Performing Arts Center in Miami, FL.
“Mosiah” offers a powerful and dramatic portrayal of Garvey, the Jamaican-born leader who founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) and sought to unify the African diaspora through initiatives like the Black Star Line. The film is set in 1923 New York and focuses on Garvey’s high-stakes trial for mail fraud—a charge widely believed to have been orchestrated by the government to undermine his revolutionary efforts. The narrative skillfully interweaves courtroom drama with flashbacks that explore Garvey’s personal struggles and his relationship with his wife, Amy Jacques Garvey.

The film was written by Miami native Samuel Lee Fudge, who also stars as Marcus Garvey, and was directed by Jirard. The screenplay, co-written by Jirard, delves deep into Garvey’s legal battles and highlights his unwavering spirit. The film’s production team also includes producers Alima Albari and Danielle “Pocket” Brown, each of whom played a crucial role in bringing this important story to life.
“Mosiah” has garnered critical acclaim internationally, winning awards at prestigious film festivals across Africa, the UK, Italy, and Jamaica. The film’s success on the global stage underscores its significant role in celebrating Garvey’s enduring legacy.
